1/16-Scale F-15 Wind Tunnel
Test
The
F-15 wind tunnel testing at Georgia Tech has primarily taken place in our
Low Turbulence Wind Tunnel (LTWT) facility with 1/32-scale models.
Additional tests were run in the 7' x 9' Harper Wind Tunnel to ensure results
were independent of wall and tunnel specific effects. We have recently
fabricated a 1/16-scale F-15 model for tests in the Harper Tunnel scheduled
April 1998.
The
following are the primary goals of this test series:

Measurement
of spectral characteristics at the top of the vertical tail for this larger
scale model. This will provide an intermediate model scale to our
existing data sets.

Test
surface fence devices for the attenuation of nearly periodic fluctuating
energy at tails. Previous small scale tests have identified regions
of fence effectiveness.

Measure
aerodynamic forces on model in both the with- and without-fence cases.
Tests with attenuation fences on a 59.3° delta wing showed no appreciable
effect on lift or drag.

Visualize
surface structures due to instabilities in the primary vortex flow.
With the large scale model, structures will be larger in size and lower
in frequency, which is favorable for flow visualization testing.

Visualize
the effects surface fences have on the fluctuating flow field. Understanding
the disruption mechanism of the fences may allow a more refined fence device
design.
